From politics to economics: The investigation of the determinants of local administrative hierarchy in the Tang–Song transition

open access: yesAsia‐Pacific Economic History Review, Volume 65, Issue 1, Page 39-78, March 2025.
Abstract This study collects original data to examine the determinants of classification criteria of county hierarchy and its rank variations during the Tang–Song period. The results reveal that the county hierarchy was affected by both economic and political situations, with more emphasis on politics in Tang and economics in Song.

Macau as Method: Recombinant Urbanism in Post‐Socialist China

open access: yesAsia Pacific Viewpoint, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In ‘Asia as Method’, Chen Kuan‐Hsing argues for the value of an indigenous inter‐Asian approach to analysing the effects of European imperialism on the countries and citizens of Asia. This article mobilises both Chen's inter‐Asian referencing strategy and the city‐state of Macau to explore Macau's role in China's engagements with global ...

Design and Experimental Research on a Chisel-Type Variable Hierarchical Deep Fertilization Device Suitable for Saline–Alkali Soil

open access: yesAgriculture
In China, there are around 36.7 million hectares of saline–alkali lands that hold utilization potential. Precision fertilization stands as a vital measure for enhancing the quality of saline–alkali soil and promoting a significant increase in crop yields.

Integrating Sr isotopes, microchemistry, and genetics to reconstruct Salmonidae species and life history

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
Abstract Recent approaches to fisheries research emphasize the importance of the coproduction of knowledge in building resilient and culturally mindful fisheries management frameworks. Despite widespread recognition of the need for Indigenous knowledge and historical reference points as baseline data, archaeological data are rarely included in ...

Coastal evolution, environmental change and carbon storage in the Thung Prong Thong Mangrove, eastern Gulf of Thailand

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Palaeoenvironmental records along the eastern coast of Thailand remain sparse, with only a few studies attempting to reconstruct past climatic and environmental conditions. However, additional palaeoenvironmental, palaeoclimatic and sea‐level records are needed to improve our understanding of coastal evolution and local environmental changes.

Afforestation Enhances Soil Ecosystem Multifunctionality by Improving Soil Quality and Enzyme Activities in Coastal Saline–Alkali Land

open access: yesBiology
Afforestation is critical for enhancing soil quality and optimizing land use in coastal saline–alkali regions. However, the dynamics of soil quality and ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) during afforestation, as well as their coupling relationships ...

Stratigraphic evidence for modern‐like glacier extents in south‐central Alaska within the last glacial period (MIS 3)

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
The last (Wisconsinan) glacial period was punctuated in North America by two glacial maxima, known as the Early and Late Wisconsinan glaciations. In Alaska, these maxima and their subsequent retreats have been the object of dating efforts to reconstruct local climatic events and compare them to global trends.
