Cyclopentadienides of ytterbium (III) and ytterbium (II)
Journal of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry, 1966Abstract The reaction of anhydrous ytterbium (III) chloride with sodium cyclopentadienide followed by crystallization from tetrahydrofuran (THF) gives the tetrahydrofuranate Yb(C5H5)3 · C4H8O (I), which can easily be converted into the ammoniate Yb(C5H5)3 · NH3 (II) by treatment with the stoichiometric amount of ammonia.

Magnetoresistance of Ytterbium
Physics Letters A, 1968Abstract The magnetoresistance of Yb at 1.3°K and in magnetic fields up to 20 kOe is reported. The Fermi surface of Yb supports no open orbits and the single-OPW model of Yb is not adequate. It is suggested that the Fermi surface is closed and occupies a small volume.

Rotational Damping in Ytterbium Nuclei
Physical Review Letters, 2002We have made the first clear measurements of rotational damping widths in nuclei. In a mixture of three Yb nuclei, these widths are 300 +/- 60 keV between 1.2 and 1.5 MeV gamma-ray energy [approximately (37-57)Planck's constant]. Compound damping and motional narrowing are discussed in connection with these results.

The vaporization behavior of ytterbium(III) fluoride and ytterbium(II) fluoride
Journal of the Less Common Metals, 1976Abstract The modes of vaporization of stoichiometric YbF 2 and YbF 3 and of phases, or mixtures of phases, of intermediate compositions were studied at 1273–1833 K in high vacua using a molybdenum Knudsen cell. X-ray powder patterns, and the results of chemical analyses of vaporization residues, showed that YbF 2 and YbF 3 both vaporize ...

Static Dipole Polarizability of Ytterbium
The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2007The static dipole polarizability of the ground state ytterbium atom is calculated using full and approximate relativistic ab initio methods. Our recommended polarizability of 143 au is consistent with experimental atomic spectral data. The corresponding van der Waals coefficient C6 of Yb2, derived using Padé approximants, is 2062 (200) au.

Reversible Mutarotation in a Macrocyclic Ytterbium Complex
Chemistry – A European Journal, 2010AbstractM40 is a four‐fold symmetry macrocyclic ligand endowed with axial and central chiral elements, all of R configuration. It promptly binds late lanthanides (YbIII and LuIII) yielding a negative helicity, as witnessed by NIR‐electronic circular dichroism.

We show that divalent ytterbium ions are present in ytterbium doped aluminosilicate glass. The presence of Yb2+-ions may influence the formation of induced color centers in ytterbium doped fiber lasers leading to reduced performance.

Synthesis and characterisation of iodo functionalised ytterbium(II) and ytterbium(III) alkoxides
Chemical Communications, 1996The reaction of YbI2 in thf with an equimolar quantity of K(OCPh3) affords [{YbI(µ-OCPh3)(η2-dme)}2] 1; upon photolysis, YbI2 reacts with dme and yields [{YbI2(µOMe)(η2-dme)}2] 2; the solid-state structures of 1 and 2 are determined.

Abstract X-ray parametric, differential thermal and metallographic methods were used to establish the ytterbium-magnesium phase diagram. A eutectic reaction occurs at 31.5 at. % Mg and 496°C. A eutectoid reaction associated with the 792°C α-β transformation temperature of pure ytterbium occurs at 8.0 at. % Mg and 447°C. The maximum solid solubilities
