Using finite element and Okada models to invert coseismic slip of the 2008 Mw 7.2 Yutian earthquake, China, from InSAR data

We invert InSAR from ascending and descending passes of ENVISAT/ASAR data to estimate the distribution of coseismic slip for the 2008 Mw 7.2 Yutian earthquake by separately using uniform finite element models (FEMs), non-uniform FEMs, and analytical elastic half-space (Okada) models.

The 2009 Ms 7.3 Yutian Earthquake ruptured the boundary between Yutian Country and Qira Country, Xinjiang. To simulate coseismic deformation of an earthquake, usually dislocation model with the assumption of homogeneous, isotropic and elastic half-space are applied.

Multiple parallel strike‐slip faults cut through the Ashikule basin, Xinjiang. The Ashikule basin was struck by an M w 7.0 earthquake on 12 February 2014. To distinguish the causative fault from these parallel faults, the rupture process of the earthquake was investigated.

Eight M≥7.0 earthquakes have occurred around Bayan Har block since 2000, resulting huge casualties and countless economic loss. Specifically, four M≥6.0 earthquakes occurred near the western boundary of Bayan Har block from 2008 to 2020.

Abstract The ENE striking Altyn-Tagh Fault and the WNW striking Karakax Fault are two major strike–slip fault systems in northern Tibet, and form a prominent ~ 2000 km long fault system. The 2008 Yutian normal faulting earthquake (Mw 7.1) struck near the southern edge of the Tarim Basin, where the two fault systems converge.
