z-scan: a simple sensitive technique for measuring refractive nonlinearities

Annual Meeting Optical Society of America, 1989
We present a simple yet highly sensitive technique for determining the sign and magnitude of nonlinear refraction. Using a single focused Gaussian beam with a constant input pulse energy, the far field transmittance is measured through a finite aperture as a function of the sample position with respect to the focal plane along the propagation path (z).

Population lensing effect in Cr:LiSAF probed by Z-scan technique

Optics Communications, 2006
Abstract An experiment has been performed for measuring a nonlinear refractive index that is due to the polarizability difference Δ α P between excited ( 4 T 2 ) and ground ( 4 A 2 ) states in a Cr 3+ :LiSAF crystal at λ  = 647 nm. The latter one is responsible for a population lensing effect which has been monitored by using the eclipsing Z ...

Time analogue of the z-scan technique suitable to waveguides

The European Physical Journal D, 2001
We propose a new technique to perform measurements of nonlinearities in optical waveguides based on the variation of an optical pulse chirp. This technique is analogous to the z-scan technique in the time domain. We analyze the new experimental method analytically and numerically, obtaining an useful expression relating the nonlinearity with a peak ...

Application of continuous-wave laser Z-scan technique to photoisomerization

Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 2005
We extend the application of the Z-scan technique to the investigation of refractive index change associated with the photoisomerization of azobenzene polymers. The performing of a Z scan is simplified, because only a cw laser is needed in the experiments.

A colour image retrieval scheme based on Z-scanning technique

The Imaging Science Journal, 2013
This paper proposes a new colour image retrieval scheme using Z-scanning technique for content-based image retrieval (CBIR). In recent years, the CBIR is a popular research topic for image retrieval. This paper proposes a scheme which employs the Z-scanning technique to extract directional intensity features for measuring the similarity between query ...

Excited State Studies in Ruthenium Porphyrins Using Z-Scan Technique

Latin America Optics and Photonics Conference, 2010
This work reports the excited state dynamics performed for free base tetrapyridyl porphyrins (H2TPyP) with peripheral ruthenium groups attached to pyridine rings aiming to obtain its photophysical parameters using single pulse and pulse train Z-Scan.

Z-scan measurement technique for non-Gaussian beams and arbitrary sample thicknesses

Optics Letters, 1995
We demonstrate a new Z-scan measurement technique that permits the use of non-Gaussian beams and thick, as well as thin, samples. We expect that this technique will make possible the measurement of optical nonlinearities by the use of lasers that previously would have been unsuitable for this purpose, because of either inadequate beam quality or ...
