Stable social structure of spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta during the dry and wet season in Central Tuli, Botswana

open access: yesWildlife Biology, Volume 2025, Issue 6, November 2025.
Group‐living animals often exhibit dynamic social structures, with fission–fusion behavior enabling adaptive responses to environmental changes. Spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta are large carnivores with complex social dynamics influenced by intrinsic factors, such as rank and kinship, and extrinsic factors, such as prey availability.

Predators and management influence adult sex ratio of ungulate communities: Synergies and challenges for contemporary conservation

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 11, Page 3026-3039, November 2025.
Predators and management can influence ungulate adult sex ratio (ASR) through multiple pathways, with important implications for breeding system evolution and population dynamics. Given many landscapes are defaunated of natural predators, we demonstrate the importance of incorporating sex‐biased wildlife management into contemporary conservation plans.

The star-forming environment of a ULX in NGC 4559: an optical study

open access: yes, 2004
We have studied the candidate optical counterparts and the stellar population in the star-forming complex around a bright ULX in NGC4559, using HST/WFPC2, XMM-Newton/OM, and ground-based data.

3D Simulations of Betelgeuse's Bow Shock

open access: yes, 2012
Betelgeuse, the bright, cool red supergiant in Orion, is moving supersonically relative to the local interstellar medium. The star emits a powerful stellar wind which collides with this medium, forming a cometary structure, a bow shock, pointing in the ...

OSO-8 X-ray observations of AM Herculis [PDF]

open access: yes
Hard X-ray observations of the binary system AM Her were coincident with soft X-ray and ground-based optical measurements. In the 2-60 KeV band, variability was detected with an eclipse during phases 0.5 to 0.7 with respect to the 0.
