A contribution to the floristics and vegetation of Zanskar (Kashmir)

Some observations on the vegetation and plant-ecology were made on a journey through Zanskar (part of Jammu and Kashmir state). Trees are growing near water-courses on about 3800m also in the dry southern part of Zanskar; the timberline on both sides of the highest ridge of the Himalayas seems to be situated at about 3800-3900m.

Zanskar valley, nested in the Indian Himalayas is at a turning point of its history. After centuries of Buddhist-Muslim marriages, these are now rejected by both religious groups. This paper addresses the impact of the rise of religious fundamentalism on social regulation and communal negotiation in Padum and Zanskari society.

Zamthang, epicentre of Zanskar’s rock art heritage

This paper intends to present the petroglyph site of Zamthang (Zam thang) located in the Lungnak (Lung nag) valley of Zan- skar (bZangs dkar), Kargil district of Ladakh (La dwags), Jammu and Kashmir, India. It will show that this site can be consid- ered as the most important one from about 20 known rock art sites in Zanskar.
