Iflaviruses in arthropods: when small is mighty

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
Many arthropod species harbor iflaviruses, which often cause covert (asymptomatic) infections, but may still affect host fitness. We review the impact of iflaviruses on arthropod fitness, immunity, behaviour as well as the iflavirus’ host range, transmission, tissue tropism and the interactions with other microorganisms within arthropods.

The impact of short‐term flooding on soil microbial communities, soil nitrogen and maize productivity in clay loam soils of Ohio, United States

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, EarlyView.
A short‐term flood, implemented in a field experiment with sprinkler irrigation in maize production systems, increased soil moisture levels and reduced autoclaved citrate extractable protein, an indicator of soil biological health that reflects organically bound soil nitrogen, and also corresponded to greater differential abundance of soil bacterial ...

Food without fire: Environmental and nutritional impacts from a solar stove field experiment

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Over 80% of the population in rural Sub‐Saharan Africa relies on biomass cooking fuel, a substantial source of anthropogenic greenhouse gases. We use a field experiment in Zambia to investigate the impact of solar stoves on biomass fuel use and cooking habits.

First Zoeal Stage of the Snapping Shrimp Alpheus Fabricius, 1798 (Caridea: Alpheidae): New Description of Alpheus bouvieri A. Milne‐Edwards, 1878 and Literature Review

open access: yesActa Zoologica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Based on adult morphological characters, the more than 300 species of Alpheus were divided into seven informal species groups, but some groups are not supported by molecular data. The aim here was to describe the zoea I of Alpheus bouvieri, and to do a review of the larval descriptions available in the literature, analysing whether the ...
