Thermodynamic, Economic and Sustainability Analysis of Solar Organic Rankine Cycle System with Zeotropic Working Fluid Mixtures for Micro-Cogeneration in Buildings

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
Globally there are several viable sources of renewable, low-temperature heat (below 130 °C), particularly solar energy, geothermal energy, and energy generated from industrial wastes.

Design and Optimization of a Novel Kalina‐Organic Rankine Cycle System Based on LNG Cold Energy Utilization

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 21, Issue 3, May/June 2026.
ABSTRACT This study proposes a novel integrated system (SDKC‐DORC) that combines a split‐flow dual‐pressure Kalina cycle with a secondary organic Rankine cycle for the synergistic utilization of solar energy and liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold energy.

Temperature glide matching in a zeotropic mixture heat pump [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The use of zeotropic mixtures in heat pumps should lead to a reduction of the exergy losses within the heat exchangers due to the temperature glide (TG) and thus to an improvement of the entire process. In a previous publication (ECOS 2016), the coefficient of performance (COP) as a function of evaporation / condensation temperature, compressor ...

Integrated Flue‐Gas Heat Recovery for Optimized Steam and Power Generation Using Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC): A Technical and Economic Assessment

open access: yesEnergy Science &Engineering, Volume 14, Issue 5, Page 2499-2513, May 2026.
Integration of a steam cycle with an existing gas turbine increased efficiency from 32% to 51%, reducing fuel consumption by 21.4% and CO2 emissions by 18.6%. The modification generated USD 13.9 million annual savings and lowered the Levelized Cost of Energy to 38.7 USD/MWh, with a 3‐year payback.

Techno‐Economic Analysis of Hydrocarbon‐CO2 Binary Mixtures in Heat Pump‐Based Thermal Energy Storages

open access: yesEnergy Technology, Volume 14, Issue 4, April 2026.
Heat‐pump charging of Carnot batteries with zeotropic large temperature glide CO2–alkane mixtures enables charging from ambient to ≈398.15 K with improved heat‐exchanger temperature matching at moderate pressure ratios. The highest COP occurs near xCO2 ≈ 0.15, whereas cost and throttling losses rise monotonically with CO2 content; butane isomers ...

Experimental Study and Optimization of the Organic Rankine Cycle with Pure NovecTM649 and Zeotropic Mixture NovecTM649/HFE7000 as Working Fluid

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is widely used in industry to recover low-grade heat. Recently, some research on the ORC has focused on micro power production with new low global warming potential (GWP) replacement working fluids.

Zeotropic mixtures study in plate heat exchangers and ORC systems

open access: yesApplied Thermal Engineering, 2023
To our best knowledge, there are no correlations in the scientific literature to predict the twophase heat transfer coefficients of Hydrofluoroethers pure fluids and zeotropic mixtures used in plate heat exchangers. This work has allowed the development of evaporation and condensation correlations for such fluids.

Exploratory Study on Carbon Dioxide Blends With Low‐GWP Working Fluids for Medium and High‐Temperature Heat Pumps Under Step Pressure

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Chemical Engineering, Volume 21, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
ABSTRACT This study investigates binary zeotropic mixtures of R744 (CO₂) blended with eco‐friendly refrigerants for medium‐high temperature heat pumps, comparing them with conventional R744/R134a systems. All mixtures meet 60–80 K temperature lift requirements under low‐temperature conditions. A genetic algorithm optimized system parameters using fixed
