Abundance and densities of beaked and bottlenose whales (family Ziphiidae)

open access: yesJ. Cetacean Res. Manage., 2023
Estimating the abundance and density of beaked whales is more difficult than for most other cetacean species. Consequently few estimates appear in the published literature. Field identification is problematic, especially for the smaller species, and visual detection rates decrease dramatically with Beaufort sea state; prior experience is very important

Toothed Whales Have Black Neurons in the Blue Spot

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences, 2022
Neuromelanin (NM) is a dark polymer pigment that is located mostly in the human substantia nigra, and in the locus ceruleus, referred to as “the blue spot”.

Deep ocean drivers better explain habitat preferences of sperm whales Physeter macrocephalus than beaked whales in the Bay of Biscay

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Species Distribution Models are commonly used with surface dynamic environmental variables as proxies for prey distribution to characterise marine top predator habitats.

Deep–diving behaviour of the northern bottlenose whale,Hyperoodon ampullatus(Cetacea: Ziphiidae) [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B: Biological Sciences, 1999
Using suction–cup attached time–depth recorder/VHF radio tags, we have obtained the first diving data on northern bottlenose whales ( Hyperoodon ampullatus ), the first such data on any species within the family Ziphiidae. Two deployments in 1997 on northern bottlenose whales in a submarine canyon off Nova Scotia demonstrated their exceptional diving ...

KOGIA PUSILLA FROM THE MIDDLE PLIOCENE OF TUSCANY (ITALY) AND A PHYLOGENETIC ANALYSIS OF THE FAMILY KOGIIDAE (ODONTOCETI, CETACEA)

open access: yesRivista Italiana di Paleontologia e Stratigrafia, 1999
A partial skull of an odontocete cetacean from Middle Pliocene sediments of Monte Voltraio (Pisa Province, Tuscany, Italy) is examined. This fossil, erroneously referred to the family Ziphiidae and described in the past as holotype of the species ...

Long-Term Depth Records of Satellite-Tagged Northern Bottlenose Whales Reveal Extraordinary Dive Capabilities. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study used records from 13 satellite tags deployed off Jan Mayen to provide an extensive description of the dive behavior of northern bottlenose whales in the Nordic Seas. Our findings demonstrate that this species has extraordinary capabilities to dive, and presumably feed, throughout the water column including at the sea floor.

A young strap-toothed whale in Tasmanian waters [PDF]

open access: yes, 1984
The stranding of a young Strap-toothed Whale is the first breeding record of this species in Australia. The species is present in Australian waters in summer probably associated with calving and the early growth of young.

Towards a better characterisation of deep-diving whales’ distributions by using prey distribution model outputs?

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
In habitat modelling, environmental variables are assumed to be proxies of lower trophic levels distribution and by extension, of marine top predator distributions.
