Unraveling chemical origins of dendrite formation in zinc-ion batteries via in situ/operando X-ray spectroscopy and imaging

open access: yesNature Communications
To prevent zinc (Zn) dendrite formation and improve electrochemical stability, it is essential to understand Zn dendrite growth, particularly in terms of morphology and relation with the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film. In this study, we employ in-

Biomineralization-inspired dendrite-free Zn-electrode for long-term stable aqueous Zn-ion battery

open access: yesNano Energy, 2022
Rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIB) are a promising type of energy storage device but suffer from the growth of uncontrollable Zn dendrites, which result in the shortcut of the battery. Herein, inspired by the regulated nucleation and growth of inorganic minerals from porous organic matrix within the biomineralization process, dopamine derived

Low‐Cost, Large‐Scale Nanoporous Metals by Mechanical Alloying, Oxide Reduction, and Dealloying of Powders

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Powder metal processing provides scalable advantages in nanoporous (np) metal development. Mechanical alloying is used to produce unique precursors for hybrid nanopore formation by oxide reduction and dealloying. As demonstrated in np Ag, this approach improves process efficiency while promoting smaller ligaments and larger pores, both of which are ...

Quantitative Microstructure of Multiphase Al-Zn-Si-(Mg) Coatings and Their Effects on Sacrificial Protection for Steel

open access: yesMetals
A new combined analysis of SEM-BSE and EDX images using AphelionTM software was proposed to describe the quantitative microstructure (quantity and neighborhood of sacrificial phases) of Al-Zn-Si-(Mg) coatings on steel.

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.
