Abnormal Expansion Along the Synthesis of Zinc Stannate: A Way for Porous Ceramics Without Addition of Pore Generators

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 2, February 2026.
The abnormal expansion associated with the simultaneous synthesis and sintering of Zn2SnO4 from ZnO and SnO2 is due to the reaction mechanism and correlated with the conversion. This phenomenon opens the way to manufacture porous ceramics without the addition of pore generators, simplifying the process, and especially the thermal treatment.

Control of Varistor Voltage by Grain-size Control of Bi-added ZnO Varistors

open access: yesIOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2011
Relationship between the grain size of ZnO and the amounts of Bi and Sb for Bi-Ba-Sb-Co-Mn-added ZnO was investigated. The amount of Bi at which the grain size of ZnO became the maximum shifted to the notably larger one by adding small amount of Sb such as 0.01 mol%.

The Influence of Ni2O3 Doping Concentration on the Alternating Current Aging Characteristics of ZnO Varistor

open access: yesInternational Journal of Ceramic Engineering &Science, Volume 8, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT When the surge arrester is subjected to the working voltage for an extended period, it undergoes alternating current (AC) aging, which degrades the arrester's parameters and affects the safety of the power grid. Ni2O3 is an important additive in the ZnO varistor formulation, and its doping ratio significantly influences the performance of the ...

Effect of the addition of ZnO seeds on the electrical proprieties of ZnO-based varistors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
ZnO has the characteristic of presenting an intermediate value for the effective 3 eV barrier at room temperature. ZnO ceramics are applied in high-voltage systems or circuits.

Comparative Assessment of Lightning Overvoltages at Transformer and Hydrogenerator Terminals Under Nonideal Station‐Side Metal‐Oxide Arrester Conditions

open access: yesIET Electric Power Applications, Volume 20, Issue 1, January/December 2026.
This study comparatively assesses lightning‐overvoltage propagation to the transformer high‐voltage terminal and hydrogenerator busbar of a hydropower plant under prescribed lightning‐current injection and selected nonideal conditions of a station‐side metal‐oxide arrester.

Modeling of electrical transport in Zinc Oxide varistors [PDF]

open access: yesAdvances in Radio Science, 2014
The electrical transport in zinc oxide (ZnO) varistors is analyzed using microstructural material modeling. The fully three dimensional current distribution is computed by means of a nonlinear equivalent circuit model representing the assembly of current

Fabrication and electrical characteristics of flash-sintered SiO2-doped ZnO-Bi2O3-MnO2 varistors

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Ceramics, 2020
The dense ZnO-Bi2O3-MnO2-xSiO2 (ZBMS) varistors for x = 0, 1, 2, 3 wt% were fabricated by flash sintering method under the low temperature of 850 °C within 2 min. The sample temperature was estimated by a black body radiation model in the flash sintering

Determining the effect of bismuth oxide on the microstructure and electrical response of cold‐sintered ZnO varistors

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Microstructure homogeneity and grain size reduction are needed to ensure the current uniformity and reliability required in metal oxide varistors for DC circuit breakers. Cold sintering (CS)–a low‐temperature digestive liquid and high‐pressure densification process–has previously shown reduced grain growth, but it is not clear how the lower ...

Effect of Sb Addition on ZnO Grain Growth and Electrical Characteristics of Bi–Co–Mn–Ba-Added ZnO Varistors

open access: yes, 2011
With the goal of fabricating varistors with low breakdown voltages (varistor voltages), the effect of adding Sb to Bi-Co-Mn-Ba-added ZnO varistors on the ZnO grain size was investigated. To obtain a uniform ZnO grain size without reducing the grain size,

Study on the Unipolar Impulse Aging Characteristics of ZnO Varistors and Their Condition Monitoring Methods

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Metal-oxide surge arresters (MOSAs) are critical devices for overvoltage protection in power systems, and the aging characteristics of their zinc oxide (ZnO) varistors under impulse and power-frequency voltages exhibit significant differences.
