The zodiac killer ciphers

open access: yesTatra Mountains Mathematical Publications, 2010
ABSTRACT We describe the background of the Zodiac killer’s cipher, and present a strategy for how to attack the unsolved Z340 cipher. We present evidence that there is a high degree of non-randomness in the sequence of ciphertext symbols in this cipher, suggesting it has been constructed in a systematic way.

A Vigenère Solution to the Zodiac Killer's Z13 Cipher: MY NAME IS LEIGH

open access: yes
THE BREAKTHROUGH: Nobody in 55 years treated "My name is" as part of the encrypted message. Every previous attempt assumed the 13 cipher characters contained a complete name. They don't. "My name is" IS the plaintext for columns 1–8. The cipher only hides 5 characters — a single first name.
