The new facultative barley variety ‘Vivat’ adapted to the conditions of the North Caucasus

open access: yesЗерновое хозяйство России, 2018
Barley has a prominent role in the grain balance, because it is a valuable crop with many various uses. Barley ranks second in its sown area, both in Russia and in the Rostov region. Previously, spring barley was used as an insurance crop for “restoring”

Managing aquaculture in multi-use freshwater bodies: the case of Jatiluhur reservoir

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2021
The pressure on scarce freshwater resources from intensifying human activity is rising across the globe. This study presents the case of Jatiluhur—Indonesia’s largest reservoir, where unregulated aquaculture expansion has contributed to environmental ...

Simulation of the crosstalk between glucose and acetaminophen metabolism in a liver zonation model

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2022
The liver metabolizes a variety of substances that sometimes interact and regulate each other. The modeling of a single cell or a single metabolic pathway does not represent the complexity of the organ, including metabolic zonation (heterogeneity of ...

Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

The evaluation of nature conservation and forest functions interests on the example of the Český les protected landscape area

open access: yesActa Universitatis Agriculturae et Silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis, 2009
The aim of the work was to interconnect known aspects of nature conservation, which are projected in the zonation, with the quantification of forests and find out, if the interests of nature protection are in the conjuction with the high functional ...

Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 regulates cell adhesion and membrane protrusive activity of ovarian cancer cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Matrix metalloproteinase‐9 (MMP9) drives ovarian cancer progression. Using MMP9‐null cells (M9‐KO) created from ovarian cancer cells, we found MMP9 loss did not block Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)‐driven E‐cadherin dissolution or EMT but delayed and reduced EGF‐driven membrane protrusions. Transient MMP9 re‐expression drove membrane protrusion.

ZONATION Framework and Software for Conservation Prioritization

open access: yes, 2013
Zonation is a freely available framework and software for conservation resource allocation. Zonation produces a spatial priority ranking which can be used to inform conservation decision making. Zonation allows a direct link from high-resolution GIS data

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

Intertidal zonation of hemichordates in soft sediments

open access: yes, 2021
Intertidal zonation of organisms is well studied on rocky shores but less so in soft sediment communities. On rocky shores, communities are two dimensional, with biotic factors such as competition and predation setting the lower bound of a zone, whereas ...
