ABSTRACT Feed costs and limited knowledge of feeding strategies are a major constraint to the sustainability of semi‐intensive Nile tilapia aquaculture systems in sub‐Saharan Africa. In semi‐intensive systems, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) utilizes natural pond production and supplemental feed, but their relative contributions to growth remain ...

Diversity of hard-bottom fauna relative to environmental gradients in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard [PDF]
A baseline study of hard-bottom zoobenthos in relation to environmental gradients in Kongsfjorden, a glacial fjord in Svalbard, is presented, based on collections from 1996 to 1998. The total species richness in 62 samples from 0 to 30 m depth along five

Relative impacts of morphological alteration to shorelines and eutrophication on littoral macroinvertebrates in Mediterranean lakes [PDF]
Development of effective methods for assessing the ecological status of lakes based on littoral benthic fauna has been hampered by the lack of quantitative data on the relative impacts of key pressures on the benthic community.

Our study reveals that brook charr adopt distinct ‘warm’ and ‘cool’ behavioural tactics to balance foraging and thermal stress in stratified lakes. By linking fine‐scale thermal movements to morphology, we show how temperature‐driven habitat use promotes individual specialization and potential ecotypic divergence under climate change.
