A Zoology of Bell inequalities resistant to detector inefficiency [PDF]
We derive both numerically and analytically Bell inequalities and quantum measurements that present enhanced resistance to detector inefficiency. In particular we describe several Bell inequalities which appear to be optimal with respect to inefficient detectors for small dimensionality d=2,3,4 and 2 or more measurement settings at each side.

THE “Text-book of Zoology,” by Dr. Boas, which is now presented to English students in this country in the form of a translation by Miss Kirkaldy and Miss Pollard, has this advantage over many similar books at present in use, that it is complete in one ...

Zoology of Fractional Chern Insulators [PDF]
We study four different models of Chern insulators in the presence of strong electronic repulsion at partial fillings. We observe that all cases exhibit a Laughlin-like phase at filling fraction 1/3. We provide evidence of such a strongly correlated topological phase by studying both the energy and the entanglement spectra. In order to identify the key

Zipf's law, power laws, and maximum entropy [PDF]
Zipf's law, and power laws in general, have attracted and continue to attract considerable attention in a wide variety of disciplines - from astronomy to demographics to software structure to economics to linguistics to zoology, and even warfare. A recent model of random group formation [RGF] attempts a general explanation of such phenomena based on ...

Zoology of instanton solutions in flat potential barriers [PDF]
We perform a detailed study of the existence and the properties of O(4)-invariant instanton solutions in Einstein-scalar theory in the presence of flat potential barriers, i.e. barriers where the second derivative of the potential is small at the top of the barrier.

Zoology of Atlas-groups: dessins d'enfants, finite geometries and quantum commutation [PDF]
Every finite simple group P can be generated by two of its elements. Pairs of generators for P are available in the Atlas of finite group representations as (not neccessarily minimal) permutation representations P. It is unusual but significant to recognize that a P is a Grothendieck's dessin d'enfant D and that most standard graphs and finite ...

Algebraic method for constructing singular steady solitary waves: A case study [PDF]
This article describes the use of algebraic methods in a phase plane analysis of ordinary differential equations. The method is illustrated by the study of capillary-gravity steady surface waves propagating in shallow water. We consider the (fully nonlinear, weakly dispersive) Serre-Green-Naghdi equations with surface tension, because it provides a ...

Singularities and Closed String Tachyons [PDF]
A basic problem in gravitational physics is the resolution of spacetime singularities where general relativity breaks down. The simplest such singularities are conical singularities arising from orbifold identifications of flat space, and the most challenging are spacelike singularities inside black holes (and in cosmology). Topology changing processes

Speakable and unspeakable after John Bell [PDF]
`Philosophy' was speakable for John Bell but is not for many physicists. The border between philosophy and physics is here illustrated through Brownian motion and Bell experiments. `Measurement', however, was unspeakable for Bell. His insistence that the physics of quantum measurement should not be confined to the laboratory and that physics is ...

Two examples of non strictly convex large deviations [PDF]
We present two examples of a large deviations principle where the rate function is not strictly convex. This is motivated by a model used in mathematical finance (the Heston model), and adds a new item to the zoology of non strictly convex large deviations. For one of these examples, we show that the rate function of the Cramer-type of large deviations
