Marine‐derived nutrients shape the functional composition of High Arctic plant communities

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 6, Page 1606-1621, June 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Low temperatures and nutrient limitation have shaped Arctic plant communities, which are now affected by biome‐wise changes in both climate and nutrient cycling. Rising temperatures are favouring taller plant species with more resource‐acquisitive traits across the ...

Old methane fuels modern river food web

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Dominant ecological paradigms provide theoretical frameworks for two basal sources of carbon to riverine food webs: carbon fixed by algae and submerged macrophytes (autochthonous) and carbon fixed by terrestrial vascular plants that enters aquatic ecosystems as litter ...

Food web trophic control modulates tropical Atlantic reef ecosystems response to marine heat wave intensity and duration

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
In this study we showed that trophic control modulates the effects of marine heatwaves (MHWs) on species biomass dynamics in a tropical and pristine Atlantic reef ecosystem. Our study provides insights into how the strength of predator–prey interactions may generate different outcomes in face of intensified and prolonged MHWs. Abstract Marine heatwaves

Habitat engineering by an apex predator generates spatial trophic dynamics across a temporal environmental stress gradient

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 94, Issue 4, Page 611-626, April 2025.
American alligators ameliorate dry‐season stress by engineering deep‐water habitats and altering food‐web dynamics. This study proposes that the stress gradient hypothesis may be a special case of the intermediate disturbance hypothesis where ecosystem engineers facilitate coexistence at intermediate values of stress/disturbance.

Will I stay or will I go? Eye morphology predicts individual migratory propensity in a partial migrant

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, Volume 94, Issue 5, Page 874-883, May 2025.
A multi‐year study involving more than 2000 fish individuals across two lake systems revealed that larger pupil size correlates with migration propensity. Computational simulations show that migrants gain an extended visual detection range, particularly for small targets in low light, highlighting the role of visual adaptations in migratory behaviour ...
