Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activity of Zostera marina L. Extract
Methanol crude extract of the sea grass Zostera marina L. and organic solvent fractions (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water) were screened for antioxidant activity (total phenolic contents, DPPH scavenging activity, and reducing power) and antimicrobial activity against three human skin pathogens, two bacteria and a yeast ...

Sulphide intrusion in eelgrass (Zostera marinaL.) [PDF]
ABSTRACTSudden events of seagrass die‐off have been suggested to be induced by invasion of the phytotoxin sulphide under environmental stress generating low oxygen supply in seagrass tissues. Laboratory experiments were conducted with eelgrass (Zostera marinaL.) to measure intra‐plant changes in oxygen and sulphide by means of microelectrodes at ...

Combining habitat suitability modelling with field‐based habitat assessment provides more precise inputs for mapping seagrass restoration suitability across regions and helps uncover the key drivers of restoration outcomes. This approach can greatly improve confidence in identifying the most suitable areas to maximise success in larger scale ...

Vegetation Increases CH4 Emissions and Methanotroph Diversity in Marine Sediments
Seagrass meadows enhance carbon burial but also increase methane (CH4) emissions from marine sediments. The presence of seagrass modifies sediment properties, creating carbon‐rich environments characterized by higher carbon accumulation and CO2 fluxes, which stimulate CH4 production and lead to higher emissions.

The role of current velocity in structuring eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) meadows [PDF]
Measurements of velocity profiles, bathymetry, and surface sediment characteristics across eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) meadows yielded information on community development processes and functional attributes of this ecosystem.

Abstract Knowledge on the ecology and life‐history traits of coastal marine species is vital to inform their conservation and management, especially as their coastal habitats come under increasing threats. However, such data have never been collated for four of the five families in the suborder Syngnathoidei—the close relatives of the better‐studied ...

In 2022, vein yellowing symptoms appeared in a zucchini crop in Greece. High‐throughput sequencing revealed the presence of a novel varicosavirus. There is a strong association of the novel virus, putatively named as cucurbit vein yellowing‐associated varicosavirus (CVYaV), with the symptoms observed on zucchini plants in the field.

Marine infectious diseases can have large-scale impacts when they affect foundation species such as seagrasses and corals. Interactions between host and disease, in turn, may be modulated by multiple perturbations associated with global change. A case in
