The Desert in Bottles: The Culturable Microbiome of the Atacama Desert's Grit Crust
Environmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 5, October 2025.The grit crust represents a unique biocrust type of the coastal Atacama Desert. Cyanobacteria, green algae and free‐living fungi were isolated along a fog gradient. Phylogenetic relationships indicated novel taxa and framed an indigenous microbiome. Microclimate and soil data support functional groups related to sites.
