Spirotaenia alpina(Zygnemaphyceae: Mesotaeniaceae), a saccoderm desmid new to the British Isles: Revised description and observations on cell division

A more complete description than that hitherto available is provided for the rare saccoderm desmid Spirotaenia alpina Schmidle, recently found in quantity in a pool in SW Scotland, and a first record for the British Isles. Smaller numbers have also been found in a pool in mid-Wales. Details are provided concerning its cell division.
