Reação fenotípica de plantas de abóbora e melão à infecção por isolados simples de ZYMV e misto de ZYMV+SQMV

open access: yesJournal of Biotechnology and Biodiversity, 2014

Do stylet‐borne aphid‐transmitted viruses share the same binding sites?

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, Volume 188, Issue 1, Page 87-101, January 2026.
Here, we tested if different stylet‐borne aphid‐transmitted viruses can compete for the same binding sites within the aphid stylets. We conducted sequential transmission assays of a potyvirus (ZYMV) followed by a cucumovirus (CMV) using Aphis gossypii as a vector and melon and pepper as test plants.

Twenty years of cucurbit breeding research at the World Vegetable Center

open access: yesCrop Science, Volume 65, Issue 6, November/December 2025.
Abstract The contribution of cucurbit crops to global food and nutrition security is immense. They are economically and nutritionally important to smallholder farmers in Asia, who account for 81% of global cucurbit production. World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) has been focused for 20 years on four species: bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), ridge ...

Multilocus Sequence Typing of “Candidatus Phytoplasma Solani” and Detection of RNA Viruses Infecting Cucurbits in the Marmara Region, Türkiye

open access: yesPlant Pathology, Volume 74, Issue 6, Page 1905-1914, August 2025.
This study provides the first multilocus genetic characterisation of “Candidatus Phytoplasma solani” strains infecting cucurbits. ABSTRACT The stolbur disease associated with “Candidatus Phytoplasma solani” (CaPsol) is very common in Europe and the Mediterranean regions and adversely affects perennial or annual plants but is rarely reported on ...

Identification and characterisation of Zucchini yellow fleck virus and a novel Nepovirus from next‐generation sequencing of mixed virus infections in cucumbers (Cucumis sativus) from Crete

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, Volume 186, Issue 3, Page 248-261, May 2025.
High‐throughput sequencing from cucumber leaf samples collected in Crete, Greece, revealed mixed infections including a cucumber‐infecting isolate of Zucchini yellow fleck virus and a novel nepovirus, provisionally named cucumber nepovirus A (CuNVA).

All Roads Lead to Rome: Pathways to Engineering Disease Resistance in Plants

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 5, February 3, 2025.
Crops lost to diseases necessitate a deeper understanding of plant immunity and the development of disease resistance. Here, the arms‐race between plants and pathogens is briefly described, and a comprehensive overview of the current and emerging strategies for engineering disease resistance in plants is provided.

Reprogrammed Plant Metabolism During Viral Infections: Mechanisms, Pathways and Implications

open access: yesMolecular Plant Pathology, Volume 26, Issue 2, February 2025.
This review highlights how plant viruses reprogramme host metabolism, elucidates underlying mechanisms and discusses advanced antiviral strategies, including gene‐editing and metabolomics‐guided approaches. ABSTRACT Plant viruses pose a significant threat to global agriculture, leading to substantial crop losses that jeopardise food security and ...

Revealing hidden viruses inducing similar yellowing symptoms or remaining asymptomatic in cucurbit crops

open access: yesPlant Pathology, Volume 74, Issue 1, Page 270-282, January 2025.
Cucurbit aphid‐borne yellows virus (CABYV), watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) and Pepo aphid‐borne yellows virus (PABYV) were the most prevalent viruses affecting melon and watermelon crops across three major producing areas in Spain. Abstract Mixed viral infections occur frequently in plants, leading to diseases that can be difficult to diagnose ...

The Naturally Occurring Amino Acid Substitution in the VPg α1–α2 Loop Breaks eIF4E‐Mediated Resistance to PRSV by Enabling VPg to Re‐Hijack Another eIF4E Isoform eIF(iso)4E in Watermelon

open access: yesMolecular Plant Pathology, Volume 25, Issue 11, November 2024.
Papaya ringspot virus isolates with amino acid substitution of K105Q or E108G in VPg can break the eIF4ED71G‐mediated resistance by re‐hijacking another susceptibility factor eIF(iso)4E in watermelon. ABSTRACT Plant resistance, which acts as a selective pressure that affects viral population fitness, leads to the emergence of resistance‐breaking virus ...
