Abstract
Patents are a very important source of information in biotechnology. They are usually thought of only as a source of commercial information but many academic researchers are now patenting discoveries through their universities and colleges. The majority of biotechnology patents are issued in Japan, the USA, continental Europe, the UK and the USSR. Japan produces by far the most national patents, the USA about a quarter as many.
