Abstract

It is possible to exchange goods by a direct swap. But barter, as direct exchange is usually termed, is comparatively rare in the modern world. Consider this advertisement in the Exchange and Mart: ‘Ever Ready battery portable in exchange for any pedigree bitch up to two years.’ The formidable difficulties in the way of such an exchange are obvious.
