Abstract

Since the syndrome was first reported in mid-1981 (1–3), over 5000 cases of AIDS have been reported in the United States. The majority of cases appear in homosexual or bisexual men, intravenous drug users, Haitian immigrants, and hemophiliacs (4), while lesser numbers of cases have occurred in recipients of blood transfusions (5) and among co-habitants of patients with AIDS (6). The epidemiologic evidence is most consistent with an etiologic role for a transmissible agent, probably a virus, and this has received strong support from recent serologic data (7–9).
