Abstract
Investigators of both sleep physiology and alcoholism share several common interests. Ethanol ingestion affects the EEG sleep stages. It may also modify the metabolism of the biogenic amines, which are thought to play an important role in the regulation of sleep (see chaps. 1 and 2). Finally, there is some evidence to suggest that a disorder of sleep stage regulation may be involved in the withdrawal syndromes that occur when the chronic ingestion of ethanol is discontinued.
