Abstract
This chapter explores how the Case-based collaborative learning (CBCL) format can be adapted in different circumstances. During the Covid-19 pandemic we rapidly transitioned our CBCL curriculum to the virtual setting. In this process the CBCL format proofed robust and versatile in providing an engaging and interactive class. The CBCL method might be of interest to anyone teaching virtually. In addition, we have made iterative changes and adaptations in some of the finer points of its implementation over the years. This includes adapting the format developmentally as students gain more experience with the CBCL format as well as establish a shared knowledge base and skills upon which they can draw as they encounter new topics and courses. In both circumstances, we were compelled to think deeply about how to best balance self-directed learning with just enough guidance and support.
