Overview
This essay on multicultural education in relation to adolescence discusses diversity and difference by focusing on the dynamic intersections of race, culture, gender, and socioeconomic status in the context of globalization. Critical multicultural perspectives inform the overview and analyses of such issues as the implementation of multicultural education in classrooms, negotiations of identity, culture, and representation by youth today, and the role of popular culture, technology, and capitalism in shaping adolescent identities and behaviors in the twenty-first century.
In the US context, multicultural education has focused on addressing diversity and difference in terms of issues of race, ethnicity, and culture, and to a lesser extent, on gender/sexuality and class/socioeconomic status.
