Abstract

Angiotensin is a potent agonist that causes contraction of vascular smooth muscle. The resultant vasoconstriction in the intact organism has important physiological and pathophysiological implications which are reflected in a number of recent reviews (Peart, 1965; Gross et al., 1968; Somlyo and Somlyo, 1970). These extensive and excellent surveys have lightened my burden. In these reviews and in the recent literature I have covered, credit is given to the pioneer investigations in this already mature field; historical survey is omitted in the current review. Although I have restricted coverage to the past few years, I have found that in this period research has been adequately active to justify an attempt to describe the current state of the art. Contributions dealing with the effect of angiotensin on vascular smooth muscle have been primarily descriptive, yet enough of these bits of information have accumulated and are falling into place so that some mechanistic interpretations now seem appropriate.
