Diseases of the Male Genitalia

Dermatology

Abstract

The diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving the glans and prepuce (foreskin) present formidable clinical problems. First, the number of primary disorders is large. In addition, many common dermatoses, such as psoriasis, lichen planus and scabies, may have genital involvement. Examination of the genitalia can provide clues to the diagnosis of a puzzling dermatosis, such as psoriasis. Third, a variety of urethral disorders may also secondarily involve the penile skin. Finally, venereal disease must always be factored into the equation. The patient needs to be counseled adequately, correctly treated and referred to public health sources if a sexually transmitted disease is present. Almost as importantly, if the disorder is not sexually transmitted, the patient needs to be explicitly reassured. The approach to penile disease differs in Germany and America for two major, completely unrelated reasons.
