Abstract
The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) is one of the key proteins governing the function of the neuromuscular junction. It is the first neurotransmitter receptor to be identified as a molecular entity and to be isolated and purified in an active form. One advantage of this receptor over other receptor systems is the availability of a rich and convenient source for AChR in electric organs of electric fish (eels or rays). This, in addition to the fact that α-neurotoxins from some Elapid snakes bind specifically and with very high affinity to the AChR, has facilitated and enabled the isolation and purification of this receptor and its thorough analysis.
