Abstract

The methods by which the masses and mass-to light ratios of galaxies are determined from the velocity dispersions of stars and from dynamical studies of clusters of galaxies are outlined. It is concluded that while small clusters give no evidence for “missing mass” there is a discrepancy of about a factor of 5 in the case of large clusters. At present it is not clear whether the extra mass lies in extended envelopes of the luminous galaxies or whether it lies in a background sea of low luminosity objects not bound to any particular galaxy. Next an account is given of simple theoretical ideas on the evolution of the chemical composition of galaxies. Particular attention is drawn to the role played by the initial mass function in determining the yield — the efficiency with which evolving stars convert interstellar hydrogen into heavy elements.
