In Physics Bulletin for April 1982, Professor Finkelstein urged us 'to initiate a vigorous debate about the education and training of applied physicists'. If that vigorous debate is taking place, it is behind closed doors, as not a single letter in Physics Bulletin over the past year has responded to his prompting.
