Description

197. Ixodes rubicundus Neumann, 1904.

An Afrotropical species whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla: Bovidae; larvae and nymphs commonly feed on Macroscelidea: Macroscelididae. All parasitic stages have been collected from Artiodactyla: Bovidae, Carnivora: Felidae, and Lagomorpha: Leporidae; adults and nymphs have been recovered from Carnivora: Canidae and Hyaenidae; one adult and a few larvae have been found on Passeriformes: Ploceidae; nymphs and larvae alone have been taken from Macroscelidea: Macroscelididae, and Rodentia: Muridae and Nesomyidae; and larvae alone have been found on Carnivora: Herpestidae, Perissodactyla: Equidae, and Passeriformes: Alaudidae. Ixodes rubicundus is a very rare parasite of humans.
