Since their domestication around 7000 to 9000 BC, sheep have significantly influenced the economic, social, and cultural fabric of human society. The volume entitled "The Genetics of Sheep," edited by Piper and Ruvinsky (1997), contains comprehensive reviews of several aspects outlined in the following brief discussion of the sheep gene map.

The first contribution to the horse gene map was identification of linkage between 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and the K blood group system (Sandberg 1974). During the next 20 years, additional linkage groups were identified and the map was periodically reviewed (Sandberg and Andersson 1993).

The earliest true vertebrates are represented by fish. The largest fish class, the teleosts or bony fish, contain nearly 20,000 known species. Although this class comprises only about half of all the known vertebrate species, they are probably the least well studied at the molecular level among vertebrate phyla.

Increased interest in the structural characteristics of mammalian genomes, together with rapid advances in mapping technology, have led to the explosive expansion of gene mapping activity in recent years. Species for which gene mapping data were virtually nonexistent just a decade ago now possess substantial and serviceable gene maps that are enabling ...
