Stress singularities and the formation of birefringent strands in stagnation flows of dilute polymer solutions [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Non-Newtonian Fluid Mech. 157 (2009) 126-132, 2009
We consider stagnation point flow away from a wall for creeping flow of dilute polymer solutions. For a simplified flow geometry, we explicitly show that a narrow region of strong polymer extension (a birefringent strand) forms downstream of the stagnation point in the UCM model and extensions, like the FENE-P model.

Richardson's pair diffusion and the stagnation point structure of turbulence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
DNS and laboratory experiments show that the spatial distribution of straining stagnation points in homogeneous isotropic 3D turbulence has a fractal structure with dimension D_s = 2. In Kinematic Simulations the time exponent gamma in Richardson's law and the fractal dimension D_s are related by gamma = 6/D_s. The Richardson constant is found to be an

Liquidity traps, learning and stagnation [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Economic Review, 2008
We examine global economic dynamics under learning in a New Keynesian model in which the interest-rate rule is subject to the zero lower bound. Under normal monetary and fiscal policy, the intended steady state is locally but not globally stable. Large pessimistic shocks to expectations can lead to deflationary spirals with falling prices and falling ...

THE DYNAMICS OF STAGNATION: A PANEL ANALYSIS OF THE ONSET AND CONTINUATION OF STAGNATION [PDF]

open access: yesMacroeconomic Dynamics, 2016
This paper analyzes periods of economic stagnation in a panel of countries. We test whether stagnation can be predicted by institutional characteristics and political shocks and compare the impacts of such variables with those of traditional macroeconomic variables.

Stagnation Detection with Randomized Local Search [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Recently a mechanism called stagnation detection was proposed that automatically adjusts the mutation rate of evolutionary algorithms when they encounter local optima. The so-called $SD-(1+1)EA$ introduced by Rajabi and Witt (GECCO 2020) adds stagnation detection to the classical $(1+1)EA$ with standard bit mutation, which flips each bit independently ...

Nested separatrices in simple shear flows: the effect of localized disturbances on stagnation lines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The effects of localized two-dimensional disturbances on the structure of shear flows featuring a stagnation line are investigated. A simple superposition of a planar Couette flow and Moffatt's [J. Fluid Mech.

The effect planting hole size and manure on vegetative growth of golden teak (Tectona grandis L.)

open access: yesJournal of Degraded and Mining Lands Management, 2018
Cultivation of the golden teak (Tectona grandis L.) requires the planting hole size and appropriate use of manure. The size of planting hole provides plant growth, so that the plant can grow with optimum and appropriate use of manure to provide nutrients

A New Modified Firefly Algorithm for Optimizing a Supply Chain Network Problem

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2018
Firefly algorithm is among the nature-inspired optimization algorithms. The standard firefly algorithm has been successfully applied to many engineering problems. However, this algorithm might be stuck in stagnation (the solutions do not enhance anymore)

Differential Evolution Algorithm With Tracking Mechanism and Backtracking Mechanism

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
Differential evolution (DE) is a simple and effective evolutionary algorithm that can be used to solve various optimization problems. In general, the population of DE tends to fall into stagnation or premature convergence so that it is unable to converge

Stagnation Hugoniot Analysis for Steady Combustion Waves in Propulsion Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
The combustion mode in a steady-flow propulsion system has a strong influence on the overall efficiency of the system. To evaluate the relative merits of different modes, we propose that it is most appropriate to keep the upstream stagnation state fixed ...
