A panchromatic spatially resolved analysis of nearby galaxies – II. The main sequence – gas relation at sub-kpc scale in grand-design spirals [PDF]

open access: greenMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2020
ABSTRACT In this work, we analyse the connection between gas availability and the position of a region with respect to the spatially resolved main-sequence (MS) relation. Following the procedure presented in Enia et al. (2020), for a sample of five face-on, grand design spiral galaxies located on the MS we obtain estimates of stellar ...

Molecules in galaxies. V - CO observations of flocculent and grand-design spirals

open access: bronzeThe Astrophysical Journal, 1987
New carbon monoxide (1-0) observations of 29 spiral galaxies are presented and combined with previously existing data for 74 galaxies in order to study the dependence of the average CO surface brightness on the spiral-arm class. The total sample shows no significant correlation between the CO surface brightness and the presence or absence of grand ...

Analyzing the cosmic architecture in the vicinity of Grand-design and Flocculent spiral galaxies with Local Geometric Index

open access: green, 2023
We explore the environment of 351 grand-design and 541 flocculent spiral galaxies recently identified employing convolutional neural networks from the $17^{th}$ data release of Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We introduce a novel estimator called the Local Geometric Index to quantify the morphology of the local environment of these 892 spirals.

The detection of spiral arm modulation in the stellar disk of an optically flocculent and an optically grand design galaxy

open access: green, 2000
Two dimensional Fourier spectra of near-infrared images of galaxies provide a powerful diagnostic tool for the detection of spiral arm modulation in stellar disks. Spiral arm modulation may be understood in terms of interference patterns of outgoing and incoming density wave packets or modes.

Spiral arm amplitude variations and pattern speeds in the grand design galaxies M51, M81, and M100

open access: bronzeThe Astrophysical Journal, 1989
In the modal theory of galactic spiral structure, the amplitude of a prominent two-arm spiral pattern should oscillate slightly with galactocentric distance because of an interference between the outward and inward propagating waves. In the stellar dynamical theory, the spiral arm amplitudes should oscillate because of differential crowding near and ...

A grand-design spiral galaxy 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang with JWST [PDF]

open access: green
We report the discovery of a large ($\sim 10$ kpc diameter), massive ($\log(M_\star/M_\odot) = 10.15^{+0.01}_{-0.01}$), grand-design spiral galaxy with photometric redshift $z_{\text{phot}} = 4.03$ in the UNCOVER and Medium Band Mega Science surveys with JWST. This is the highest redshift spiral galaxy discovered with JWST so far.

Role of gas in supporting grand spiral structure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The density wave theory for the grand-design two-armed spiral pattern in galaxies is successful in explaining several observed features. However, the long-term persistence of this spiral structure is a serious problem since the group transport would ...

A New Statistical Analysis of the Morphology of Spiral Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Morphology is the starting point for understanding galaxies. Elmegreen et al. classified spiral galaxies into flocculent, multiple-arm, and grand-design galaxies based on the regularity of their spiral arm structure.
