Mixture of Input-Output Hidden Markov Models for Heterogeneous Disease Progression Modeling [PDF]
A particular challenge for disease progression modeling is the heterogeneity of a disease and its manifestations in the patients. Existing approaches often assume the presence of a single disease progression characteristics which is unlikely for neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease.

Pathogenetic mechanism of oral granulomatous diseases: An update
Oral granulomatous diseases are an intriguing group of lesions characterized by granuloma formation. Mechanisms of granuloma formation differ from disease-to-disease.

The Effect of Disease-induced Mortality on Structural Network Properties [PDF]
As the understanding of the importance of social contact networks in the spread of infectious diseases has increased, so has the interest in understanding the feedback process of the disease altering the social network. While many studies have explored the influence of individual epidemiological parameters and/or underlying network topologies on the ...

Phase diagram of epidemic spreading - unimodal vs. bimodal probability distributions [PDF]
The disease spreading on complex networks is studied in SIR model. Simulations on empirical complex networks reveal two specific regimes of disease spreading: local containment and epidemic outbreak. The variables measuring the extent of disease spreading are in general characterized by a bimodal probability distribution.

A granuloma is a discrete collection of activated macrophages and other inflammatory cells. Hepatic granulomas can be a manifestation of localized liver disease or be a part of a systemic process, usually infectious or autoimmune. A liver biopsy is required for the detection and evaluation of granulomatous liver diseases.

Aspergillosis in Chronic Granulomatous Disease
Patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) have the highest life-time incidence of invasive aspergillosis and despite the availability of antifungal prophylaxis, infections by Aspergillus species remain the single most common infectious cause of ...

DomainScope: A disease network based on protein domain connections [PDF]
Protein domains are highly conserved functional units of proteins. Because they carry functionally significant information, the majority of the coding disease variants are located on domains. Additionally, domains are specific units of the proteins that can be targeted for drug delivery purposes.

Chronic granulomatous disease: why an inflammatory disease?
Chronic granulomatous disease is a primary immunodeficiency caused by mutations in the genes encoding subunits of the phagocytic NADPH oxidase system. Patients can present with severe, recurrent infections and noninfectious conditions.

Diagnosing granulomatous disease during appendectomy
Difficulties during surgery are uncommon situations in appendectomy. For granulomatous appendicitis, literature is insufficient about surgical findings. The procedure of a 17‐year‐old male patient was a struggle due to adhesions.
