Biochemistry

Perspectives in Biology and Medicine, 1936
I want to speak of the work we have been doing in Cardiff on the metabolism of the nervous system. The work was carried out there because of the importance of the narcosis treatment. It seemed to us there a pity that a treatment such as that should be given up because of the considerable toxicity possible in relation to it.

Communication in Biochemistry

Nature, 1970
New ways of presenting and retrieving information will be necessary if biochemists are to survive the crisis brought about by the growth of published literature. This text is based on the presidential address to the Australian Biochemical Society at Adelaide, May 19, 1969.

Selenium Biochemistry

Annual Review of Biochemistry, 1990
The toxicity of selenium to animals and plants has been known and extensively documented since the 1930's, but it is only during the past 15 years that selenium has also been shown to be an essential micronutrient for animals and bacteria. Very little is known about the specific role or roles of selenium and, to date, there are only three enzyme ...

The biochemistry of complement

Nature, 1978
Current biochemical studies of the complement system are illustrated by description of the activation of complement by the classical pathway after interaction with antibody aggregates. This is described in terms of the structures of the components involved, their assembly and the mechanism of activation.

Biochemistry of Envenomation

2012
Venoms and toxins are of significant interest due to their ability to cause a wide range of pathophysiological conditions that can potentially result in death. Despite their wide distribution among plants and animals, the biochemical pathways associated with these pathogenic agents remain largely unexplored.

The Biochemistry of Metastasis

1996
Publisher Summary The formation of metastasis is separate from carcinogenesis and is the final step in the evolution of cancer. Metastasis does not appear to require the presence of altered or mutated genes. The presence of metastasis is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer.

The biochemistry of neutralization

Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, 1993
It has been shown that injections of low closes of common environmental antigens or irritants cause a reduced sensitivity during a subsequent exposure to the same antigen and irritant. On the basis of these findings, the following study was performed: 20 allergic patients who manifested allergic symptoms were observed during skin end‐point titration ...

Biochemistry of the Vitreous

1987
The chemistry and biology of the vitreous body with particular reference to the macromolecular contituents that are responsible for the structure of the tissue were discussed in detail in a previous review (1). The vitreous has several unique structural features.
