Energy dependence of the GAFCHROMIC LD‐V1 in the diagnostic radiographic modalities

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract The GAFCHROMIC LD‐V1 radiochromic film is widely used in dosimetry because it can provide high‐resolution two‐dimensional dose distributions without processing. This study aimed to evaluate the response characteristics at different effective energies, from the low‐energy range of mammography to the high‐energy range of computed tomography. Net

Venomous Bites and Stings

open access: yesDeckerMed Emergency Medicine, 2017
Approximately 8000 persons are bitten by venomous snakes in the US each year.  Mortality is low (4 to 6/yr), but morbidity can be significant, treatment costly. Overuse of surgery and antivenom is common. Simply cutting the wound with attempted aspiration is not indicated. Fasciotomy should only be used for patients with elevated compartment pressures.

Dysphagia and Mortality Risk in Individuals With Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Individuals with primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) often develop parkinsonism and dysphagia. To evaluate the clinical correlates and impact of dysphagia in this population, we compared enrollment visit data between individuals with (n = 12) versus individuals without (n = 44) dysphagia symptoms.
