Surfaceome: a new era in the discovery of immune evasion mechanisms of circulating tumor cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In the era of immunotherapies, many patients either do not respond or eventually develop resistance. We propose to pave the way for proteomic analysis of surface‐expressed proteins called surfaceome, of circulating tumor cells. This approach seeks to identify immune evasion mechanisms and discover potential therapeutic targets. Circulating tumor cells (

Polyfunctional CD8+CD226+RUNX2hi effector T cells are diminished in advanced stages of chronic lymphocytic leukemia

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CD226+CD8+ T cells express elevated levels of RUNX2, exhibit higher proliferation capacity, cytokines and cytolytic molecules expression, and migratory capacity. In contrast, CD226−CD8+ T cells display an exhausted phenotype associated with the increased expression of co‐inhibitory receptors and impaired effector functions.

Immunogenicity of pneumococcal vaccines in comorbid autoimmune and chronic respiratory diseases

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, 2019
Streptococcus pneumoniae causes pneumonia, meningitis, otitis media, and bacteremia. The mortality and morbidity of invasive pneumococcal disease are high among adults aged >65 years or those with underlying chronic or immunosuppressive conditions.

Deep learning approach to description and classification of fungi microscopic images [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Diagnosis of fungal infections can rely on microscopic examination, however, in many cases, it does not allow unambiguous identification of the species due to their visual similarity. Therefore, it is usually necessary to use additional biochemical tests. That involves additional costs and extends the identification process up to 10 days.

Cystatin A promotes the antitumor activity of T helper type 1 cells and dendritic cells in murine models of pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a disease with very poor prognosis due to therapeutic limitations. We investigated the antitumor effects of cystatin A (CSTA) in PDAC murine models. We are first to confirm that CSTA enhances T helper type 1‐mediated antitumor effects through promotion of dendritic cells and M1 macrophage activity. CSTA can be

Interacting epidemics and coinfection on contact networks [PDF]

open access: yesPLOS One 8, e71321 (2013), 2013
The spread of certain diseases can be promoted, in some cases substantially, by prior infection with another disease. One example is that of HIV, whose immunosuppressant effects significantly increase the chances of infection with other pathogens. Such coinfection processes, when combined with nontrivial structure in the contact networks over which ...

Peripheral blood leukocyte signatures as biomarkers in relapsed ovarian cancer patients receiving combined anti‐CD73/anti‐PD‐L1 immunotherapy in arm A of the NSGO‐OV‐UMB1/ENGOT‐OV30 trial

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Using mass cytometry, we analyzed serial blood samples from patients with relapsed epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) treated with oleclumab–durvalumab combination immunotherapy in the NSGO‐OV‐UMB1/ENGOT‐OV30 trial. Our analysis identified potential predictive, monitoring, and response biomarkers detectable through liquid biopsy. These findings facilitate

Effect of Immunosuppressive Agents on Hepatocyte Apoptosis Post-Liver Transplantation. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Immunosuppressants are used ubiquitously post-liver transplantation to prevent allograft rejection. However their effects on hepatocytes are unknown. Experimental data from non-liver cells indicate that immunosuppressants may promote cell death thereby ...

Classification of acute myeloid leukemia based on multi‐omics and prognosis prediction value

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The Unsupervised AML Multi‐Omics Classification System (UAMOCS) integrates genomic, methylation, and transcriptomic data to categorize AML patients into three subtypes (UAMOCS1‐3). This classification reveals clinical relevance, highlighting immune and chromosomal characteristics, prognosis, and therapeutic vulnerabilities.
