Standby efficiency and thermocline degradation of a packed bed thermal energy storage: An experimental study [PDF]
The waste heat potential from industrial processes is huge and if it can be utilized it may contribute significantly to the mitigation of climate change. A packed bed thermal energy storage system is a low-cost storage technology that can be employed to enable the utilization of waste heat from industrial processes.

The role of storage technologies throughout the decarbonisation of the sector-coupled European energy system [PDF]
We use an open, hourly-resolved, networked model of the European energy system to investigate the storage requirements under decreasing CO$_2$ emissions targets and several sector-coupling scenarios. For the power system, significant storage capacities only emerge for CO$_2$ reductions higher than 80% of 1990 level in that sector.
