Seed size influence on germination responses to light and temperature of seven pioneer tree species from the Central Amazon

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2012
In Amazon secondary forests are dominated by pioneer species that typically produce large amounts of small and dormant seeds that are able to form a persistent soil seed bank. Seed dormancy in this group of species is overcome by environmental conditions

Stemflow Dynamics in the Jamari National Forest (Brazilian Amazon): I. The Role of Tree Structure

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 58, Issue 3, May 2026.
A portion of rainfall that contacts tree canopies is drained down tree stems as stemflow. Stemflow is an underexamined component of rainfall partitioning in tropical forests. To investigate how tree canopy structural attributes influence stemflow in the Brazilian Amazon, we measured stemflow, rainfall, and dendrometric parameters of 56 trees in the ...

Unravelling the drivers of island species richness in tropical savannas

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 4, April 2026.
Murundu island area explains a substantial proportion of the variation in tree and herb richness, consistent with Island Biogeography Theory. On average, a 10% increase in island size corresponds to increases of seven tree species and 7.8 herb species.

open access: yesActa Amazonica, 1980
Resumo Uma série de 89 espécies da floresta brasileira, nas quais as características da raiz e a condição da micorrliza V-A eram conhecidas, foram usadas para testar um aspecto da hipótese de raiz magnolióide de Baylis.

Mammal Responses to Habitat Degradation Induced by Cashew Expansion in West Africa

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, Volume 29, Issue 2, Page 169-182, April 2026.
Relationships between (a) estimated mammal species richness, (b) overall mammal species photographic rate, (c) carnivore photographic rate, (d) insectivore photographic rate, (e) omnivore photographic rate and (f) herbivore photographic rate and the local habitat characteristics as denoted by the scores of the first component of the Principal Component

Structure, diversity, and spatial patterns in a permanent plot of a high Restinga forest in Southeastern Brazil Estrutura, diversidade e padrões espaciais em uma parcela permanente de floresta alta de Restinga no Sudeste do Brasil

open access: yesActa Botânica Brasílica, 2011
We assessed the structure, diversity and distribution of tree species in a 10.24-ha permanent plot of high Restinga forest (HRF) in southeastern Brazil.
