Love him for the enemies he has made: Signaling by inflammatory pro‐gun rhetoric

open access: yesPolitical Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract American politics is rife with messages designed to anger one's political enemies. In this paper, we propose and test a model suggesting that such inflammatory messages are effective because they signal that the messenger is unwilling to compromise with the groups they have offended.

Pregnancy, Birth, Neonatal, and Mental Health Outcomes Are Minimally Associated with Pregnancy Ambivalence

open access: yesStudies in Family Planning, EarlyView.
Abstract Pregnancy ambivalence is increasingly recognized and studied in sexual and reproductive health research, yet its associations with adverse outcomes remain unclear. The purpose of this paper was to explore different measures of ambivalence and whether any were associated with poor pregnancy, birth, social or mental health outcomes.

Cerebral oxygen extraction across different exercise intensities: Role of arterial PCO2${P_{{\mathrm{C}}{{\mathrm{O}}_2}}}$

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Stability in cerebral oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) is typically determined by alterations in cerebral blood flow (CBF). At rest, arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2${P_{{\mathrm{aC}}{{\mathrm{O}}_2}}}$) and OEF exhibit a strong inverse relationship owing to the powerful influence of PaCO2${P_{{\mathrm{aC}}{{\mathrm{O}}_2}}}$

Stroke and motor outcomes are associated with regional and age‐specific changes in periodic and aperiodic cortical activity

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Historically, stroke and ageing have been associated with changes in narrow‐band periodic neuronal activity, but recent work has highlighted the importance of broad‐band aperiodic activity. Aperiodic activity is represented by the 1/f slope of power spectral density generated by cortical activity.

Mitochondrial control of ciliary gene expression and structure in striatal neurons

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Neurons drive animal behaviour by receiving and transmitting information and require energy, primarily supplied by mitochondria, to function. Additionally, neurons need to sense environmental changes to adapt, a function that is locally played by the primary cilia.
