Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation from Healthy and Aphid-Stressed Scots Pine Emissions. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
One barrier to predicting biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation in a changing climate can be attributed to the complex nature of plant volatile emissions.

Kinetics of anionic polymerization of β‐myrcene in hydrocarbon solvents

open access: yesPolymer International, EarlyView.
The process of anionic polymerization of β‐myrcene in hydrocarbon solvents was examined by kinetic studies and quantum chemical calculations. Abstract The kinetics of anionic polymerization of β‐myrcene initiated by sec‐butyllithium were examined in saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbon solvents, i.e. cyclohexane, cyclohexene, 4‐vinylcyclohexene and dl‐

Unsaturated biobased polyesters from bicyclic α‐pinene‐based diols

open access: yesPolymer International, EarlyView.
We present the synthesis of four biosourced unsaturated polyesters made from chiral terpene‐based diols and esters of renewable diacids. The resulting materials harbor a bicyclic pinene ring in their backbones which leads to enhanced thermal properties while still conferring susceptibility to enzyme hydrolysis for chains having a cis alkene.

The atmospheric impacts of monoterpene ozonolysis on global stabilised Criegee intermediate budgets and SO2 oxidation : experiment, theory and modelling [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The gas-phase reaction of alkenes with ozone is known to produce stabilised Criegee intermediates (SCIs). These biradical/zwitterionic species have the potential to act as atmospheric oxidants for trace pollutants such as SO2, enhancing the formation ...

A walk in the park—Identifying healthy greenspaces using scents

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
As urbanisation accelerates globally, access to nature is increasingly recognised as vital for public health and wellbeing. We captured and analysed plant‐emitted airborne ‘scent signatures’ across Oxford's urban greenspaces to assess their potential health relevance.

The association between serum pinenes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease based on the NHANES 2013–2014

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
Background: Terpenes are known to affect metabolic status, though their relationship with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. Methods: Data from the 2013–2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were utilized ...

A novel fast gas chromatography method for higher time resolution measurements of speciated monoterpenes in air [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Biogenic emissions supply the largest fraction of non-methane volatile organic compounds (VOC) from the biosphere to the atmospheric boundary layer, and typically comprise a complex mixture of reactive terpenes. Due to this chemical complexity, achieving
