The thesis discusses mode forming in large optical waveguides of semiconductor laser diodes. Simple model of free carrier absorption is considered to clarify lasing switch from high-order to fundamental mode in large optical cavity of edge emitting diode with current or temperature increase. Experimental data are shown to be in agreement with the model.
