Effects of landscape fragmentation on floodplain fishes as revealed by species–habitat networks

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 40, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract How species interact with habitat patches is influenced primarily by habitat configuration (e.g., connectivity) and species’ functional traits. As levels of fragmentation increase, identifying the intricate connections between these components is crucial for biodiversity conservation.

Breaking Hardness–Toughness Trade‐Off in Novel (V, Nb)C Carbides via Nanoscale Phase Separation and Local‐Chemical‐Order Dislocation Network

open access: yesRare Metals, Volume 45, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Transition metal carbides demonstrate exceptional mechanical properties but confront a critical hardness–toughness trade‐off. Spinodal decomposition‐mediated phase separation is an effective approach to enhance mechanical properties in carbide ceramics through high‐temperature treatment.

Lithology modulates soil priming effect via resource limitations and bacterial community structure

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 1, Page 176-190, January 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The soil priming effect (PE), triggered by root exudate inputs that stimulates microbial activity and drives significant soil carbon (C) losses in terrestrial ecosystems.

How Do the Components of Social Capital Reduce COVID‐19 Vaccine Hesitancy? Lessons From a Canadian National Survey

open access: yesWorld Medical &Health Policy, Volume 17, Issue 4, Page 870-882, December 2025.
ABSTRACT This paper theorizes that not all components of social capital reduce vaccine hesitancy. Specifically, it hypothesizes that institutional trust, trust in experts, and social networks reduce vaccine hesitancy, while generalized trust and civic participation do not influence vaccine hesitancy.

The Empty State: Governing the Voids in a Projected Conflict‐Torn Yemen

open access: yesPolitics &Policy, Volume 53, Issue 5, October 2025.
ABSTRACT This study introduces the concept of the “Empty State” to explain a form of state dysfunction in Yemen, where state institutions exist but are stripped of their governance authority. While frameworks on fragile or failed states emphasize the weakness or collapse of state capacity, the Empty State highlights the persistence of symbolic ...

Simple sequence repeats and their expansions: role in plant development, environmental response and adaptation

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 247, Issue 2, Page 504-517, July 2025.
Summary Repetitive DNA is a feature of all organisms, ranging from archaea and plants to humans. DNA repeats can be seen both in coding and in noncoding regions of the genome. Due to the recurring nature of the sequences, simple DNA repeats tend to be more prone to errors during replication and repair, resulting in variability in their unit length ...
