Unraveling LINE‐1 retrotransposition in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The novel RetroTest method allows the detection of L1 activation in clinical samples with low DNA input, providing global L1 activity and the identification of the L1 source element. We applied RetroTest to a real‐world cohort of HNSCC patients where we reported an early L1 activation, with more than 60% of T1 patients showing L1 activity.

SACRIFICIAL ANODE CATHODIC PROTECTION OF LOW CARBON STEEL IN SEA WATER

open access: yesJournal of Engineering, 2007
Cathodic protection is a corrosion-prevention technique which uses the electrochemical properties of metals to insure that the structure to be protected becomes the cathode of an electrolytic cell.

SDG 12 needs an oceanic interface: sand mining, saltwater intrusion (SWI) and coastal sustainability

open access: yesSustainable Earth Reviews, 2023
The international development community has approached SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through the lens of specific supply chains of consumer goods and services. For example, minerals from mines to markets; wood from forests to furniture;

Is fat the sixth taste primary? Evidence and implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Explores our tongue\u27s ability to detect fat as a distinct taste similar to our ability to sense sweet, sour, bitter, acid and savory. Abstract Taste is the chemical sense responsible for the detection of non-volatile chemicals in potential foods. For

Targeting carbonic anhydrase IX/XII prevents the anti‐ferroptotic effect of stromal lactic acid in prostate carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
In prostate carcinoma, lactic acid, secreted by highly glycolytic cancer‐associated fibroblasts, is imported into tumor cells through the MCT1 transporter and prevents RSL3 and erastin‐induced ferroptosis (A). Targeting of carbonic anhydrase IX/XII, the main extracellular pH regulators, in tumor and stromal cells reduces microenvironmental acidosis and

Using grounded theory to inform the design of energy interventions for the workplace [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Much work has been published on using technological interventions to motivate reductions in home energy consumption. These interventions have produced promising results, but typically focus on emphasising the financial benefits of reductions in ...

DReAM: Per-task DRAM energy metering in multicore systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Interaction across applications in DRAM memory impacts its energy consumption. This paper makes the case for accurate per-task DRAM energy metering in multicores, which opens new paths to energy/performance optimizations, such as per-task energy-aware ...

Machine learning for identifying liver and pancreas cancers through comprehensive serum glycopeptide spectra analysis: a case‐control study

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study presents a novel AI‐based diagnostic approach—comprehensive serum glycopeptide spectra analysis (CSGSA)—that integrates tumor markers and enriched glycopeptides from serum. Using a neural network model, this method accurately distinguishes liver and pancreatic cancers from healthy individuals.

Modeling the Factors That Determine Sustainable Development Goal 12 in University Students

open access: yesEducation Sciences
SDG12 is one of the top three Sustainable Development Goals that require more urgent action. Hence, this work aims to develop and validate a conceptual model that measures the main factors which may influence university students’ sustainable consumption ...
