Moving in the Dark: Enlightening the Spatial Population Ecology of European Cave Salamanders

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
We assessed individual interactions, movement ecology and activity patterns of a subterranean population of Speleomantes strinatii, applying spatial capture–recapture modeling to a photographic dataset of 104 individuals. ABSTRACT Space use and movement are fundamental aspects of organisms' ecology, mirroring individual fitness, behavior, and life ...

Estimation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emission and its toxicity potentials from the combustion of selected fuelwoods

open access: yesCase Studies in Chemical and Environmental Engineering
In many developing nations, wood is still commonly used as a fuel for domestic cooking. However, fuelwood combustion can have a pronounced effect on air quality by releasing considerable level of PAHs, thereby posing serious risk to global and ...

Microbial exopolysaccharide production by polyextremophiles in the adaptation to multiple extremes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Polyextremophiles are microorganisms that endure multiple extreme conditions by various adaptation strategies that also include the production of exopolysaccharides (EPSs). This review provides an integrated perspective on EPS biosynthesis, function, and regulation in these organisms, emphasizing their critical role in survival and highlighting their ...

Predictive Assessment of Climate Change Impact on Water Yield in the Meta River Basin, Colombia: An InVEST Model Application

open access: yesHydrology
This paper presents a hydrological assessment of the 113,981 km2 Meta River basin in Colombia using 13 global climate models to predict water yield for 2050 under two CMIP6 scenarios, SSP 4.5 and SSP 8.5.

C9orf72 ALS‐causing mutations lead to mislocalization and aggregation of nucleoporin Nup107 into stress granules

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutations in the C9orf72 gene represent the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease. Using patient‐derived neurons and C. elegans models, we find that the nucleoporin Nup107 is dysregulated in C9orf72‐associated ALS. Conversely, reducing Nup107 levels mitigates disease‐related changes.

Social media enables people-centric climate action in the hard-to-decarbonise building sector

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
The building and construction sector accounts for around 39% of global carbon dioxide emissions and remains a hard-to-abate sector. We use a data-driven analysis of global high-level climate action on emissions reduction in the building sector using 256 ...

Transcriptional regulation of neuropeptide receptors underlies context‐dependent adaptation in Drosophila melanogaster

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Under environmental changes, the expression level of neuropeptide (NP) and neuropeptide receptor (NPR) genes changes to confer context‐dependent adaptation to the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. Through finding more regulatory elements in the NPR genes in comparison with their ligands (NPs), we found that NPR‐biased transcriptional regulation ...

Berberine–cinnamic acid co‐crystal effect in ameliorating hyperlipidemia might be regulated through the PI3K/AKT/mTOR/SREBP‐1 signaling pathway

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Berberine–cinnamic acid co‐crystal (BBR‐CA) inhibits the phosphorylation of the phosphatidylinositol 3‐kinase (PI3K)/AKT/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway, suppressing the transfer of pre‐sterol regulatory element‐binding proteins‐1 (SREBP‐1) from the endoplasmic reticulum to the nucleus. This results in a decrease in the expression level of
