Yeast strains from coconut toddy in Sri Lanka show high tolerance to inhibitors derived from the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials

open access: yesBiotechnology & Biotechnological Equipment, 2019
We previously isolated 18 Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains from coconut toddy in Sri Lanka. All the 18 strains (SLY-1 to SLY-18) could grow aerobically up to 18 mmol L−1 vanillin in yeast extract–peptone–dextrose (YPD) medium, and the SLY-10 strain ...

Molecular Analysis of Primary Vapor and Char Products during Stepwise Pyrolysis of Poplar Biomass [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Pyrolysis of biomass produces both pyrolysis oil and solid char. In this study, poplar has been pyrolyzed in a stepwise fashion over a series of temperatures from 200 to 500 °C, and both the primary products contributing to pyrolysis oil and the changes ...

The Physicochemical, Nutritional, and Antioxidative Properties of Plant‐Based Quinoa Yogurt

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 13, Issue 9, September 2025.
The nutritional value of quinoa yogurt has been enhanced. The types and contents of organic acids and volatile flavor substances in the quinoa yogurt have been enhanced, and they were higher than those in commercial yogurt. Simulating the digestive process can enhance the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of quinoa yogurt.

Inhibition of the Clathrin Terminal Domain—Amphiphysin Protein–Protein Interaction. Probing the Pitstop 2 Aromatic Moiety

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 20, Issue 16, August 16, 2025.
Pitstop 2 binds to the clathrin terminal domain. This work explores the nature of the benzylidene moiety, R. The synthesis of 56 novel analogues reveals enhanced potency of a multiple analogues, with catechol‐free 2,3‐dihydroxybenzo[b][1,4]dioxone (54) returning a 1.2 μm IC50, ca 10‐fold more active than Pitstop 2. Pitstop 2, (Z)‐N‐(5‐(4‐bromenzylidene)

2‐Formyl‐5‐(hydroxymethyl)furan (HMF) Derivatives as Active Complexing Agent for CO2 Insertion Reaction

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, Volume 28, Issue 26, July 12, 2025.
Renewable‐based furanics derived from 5‐HMF are used to synthesize cyclic organic carbonates (COCs) via CO2 insertion into epoxides. The BHTHF/NaBr complexing system shows high activity, achieving 94–99% epoxide conversion and 70–99% COC selectivity under mild conditions.

Electrochemistry and Antioxidant Activities of Substituted Furanyl Nitrone: The Role of the Nitro Group

open access: yesChemElectroChem, Volume 12, Issue 13, July 3, 2025.
N‐methyl‐nitroaryl‐furanyl‐nitrone (LQB‐569) suffers a 10‐electron reduction, forming a hydrazine group with two terminal hydroxylamine groups. Nitrones’ antioxidant capacity (AO), despite being very low, correlates with their oxidation profiles, and the ones able to oxidize more easily have better results on DPPH• scavenging and ferric‐reducing ...

An Improved Method for Determination of Pentosans in Pulps using Dual-Wavelength Spectroscopy

open access: yesBioResources, 2016
The aim of this study was to determine the pentosan content in pulps by a dual-wavelength spectrophotometric method. The method was based on the boiling reaction between pentosan and 12% hydrochloric acid, in which pentosan was subsequently converted to ...
