Errors in Measurements of 222Rn in Methane and Carbon Dioxide Using Scintillation Cells Calibrated for 222Rn in Air

Health Physics, 2014
Scintillation cells are used typically for measuring the concentration of (222)Rn in air and are calibrated for that purpose. However, scintillation cells are sometimes used for measuring (222)Rn in natural gas or carbon dioxide. The counting efficiencies of scintillation cells for measurements of (222)Rn in these gases should be different from those ...

Correlation Among the Terrestrial Gamma Radiation, the Indoor Air 222Rn, and the Tap Water 222Rn in Switzerland

Health Physics, 1989
The external gamma radiation and the indoor air Rn (222Rn) concentration were measured in 55 houses of the South East Grisons, the Urseren valley, and the Upper Rhine valley (crystalline subsoils) and in 39 houses of the Molasse basin and the Helvetic nappes (sedimentary subsoils). In homes located on a crystalline subsoil, a mean cellar gamma level of

Production and measurement of 222Rn standards

Applied Radiation and Isotopes, 1998
Abstract For the production of radon standards, 222 Rn is transferred from a solid 226 Ra source located in a vacuum system to different types of vessels such as glass bulbs or stainless steel cylinders. Using this radium source, up to 2 MBq of 222 Rn gas can be completely transferred when the radon is condensed in a liquid-nitrogen cooled vessel.

A study of 222Rn/220Rn exhalation rate and indoor 222Rn/220Rn levels in higher Himalayan terrain

Radiation Protection Dosimetry
Abstract The noble radioactive gas radon and its isotope thoron dominate terrestrial radiation in the indoor environment. These gases eventually disintegrate generating radioactive ions that readily adhere to aerosol particles. This study was conducted in a tectonically active location with significant radon concentrations.

An ionization chamber for 222Rn measurements

Nuclear Instruments and Methods, 1973
Abstract A 4-1 ionization chamber for 226 Ra determination is described. By measuring the activity of 222 Rn in secular equilibrium with 226 Ra, the 226 Ra activity of a sample can be determined. The sample is kept in a flask for about one month to achieve secular equilibrium.

Controls on pore-fluid concentration of 4He and 222Rn and the calculation of 4He/222Rn ages

Journal of Geochemical Exploration, 1980
Abstract Controls governing the production of 4He and 222Rn in the solid phase as well as parameters and processes contributing to their transport into the pore fluid are discussed. 222Rn activity is used to quantify the uranium sources for 4He and the result is a simplified pore-fluid age equation which is virtually independent of the porosity, the ...

Experimental investigation of deposition velocity of 222Rn progeny in a walk-in-type calibration chamber at different 222Rn concentrations

Journal of Environmental Radioactivity
Deposition velocities of 222Rn progeny were determined using 222Rn progeny sensors (DRPS) and flow-mode integrated samplers at various 222Rn gas concentrations under steady atmospheric conditions in a large walk-in type calibration chamber of volume 22.7 m3 with a surface-to-volume ratio of 2.1 m-1. The deposition of 222Rn progeny on indoor surfaces is
