Investigations of the lower and middle atmosphere at the Arecibo Observatory and a description of the new VHF radar project [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
The atmospheric science research at the Arecibo Observatory is performed by means of (active) radar methods and (passive) optical methods. The active methods utilize the 430 NHz radar, the S-band radar on 2380 MHz, and a recently constructed Very High ...

PSR J0609+2130: A disrupted binary pulsar? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
We report the discovery and initial timing observations of a 55.7-ms pulsar, J0609+2130, found during a 430-MHz drift-scan survey with the Arecibo radio telescope.

Upconversion Nanoparticles Embedded Photonic Contact Lens for Transepithelial Corneal Crosslinking Using Hyaluronate – Riboflavin Conjugate

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A minimally invasive, transepithelial corneal cross‐linking (TE‐CXL) approach is presented using upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)‐loaded contact lenses (UCLs), after topical delivery of hyaluronate–riboflavin conjugates. The NIR‐to‐UV/blue light conversion by UCNPs in a UCL can activate riboflavin for TE‐CXL, resulting in the biomechanical strength ...

Intraspecific diversity at two trophic levels influences plant–herbivore interactions

open access: yesEcosphere, 2020
Diversity within species can have community‐level effects similar in magnitude to those of species diversity. Intraspecific diversity in producers and consumers has separately been shown to affect trophic interactions, yet we have little understanding of

Product design as a vehicle to integrate arts and sciences in design education [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In many parts of the world, Higher Education has often considered arts and sciences as an odd combination and many institutions have avoided this particular mix. Historically, this has been the accepted view; however, this view is changing.

Unusual Swelling Behavior of Hydrogels Modified with Spiropyran as Appendage or Crosslinker

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Not so innocent after all—spiropyran crosslinkers in methylenebisacrylamide‐crosslinked poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid) hydrogels increase crosslinking density, but also, counterintuitively, increase swelling. Charge complexation, cooperative chemo‐mechanical effects, and aggregation may explain these observations.

Intrathecal baclofen therapy in patients with spastic paraplegia: retrospective evaluation of pretreatment drugs, test dosage, dose increments and final therapy

open access: yesBrain and Spine
Introduction: Intrathecal baclofen therapy (ITB) is an effective alternative for severe generalized spasticity after unsuccessful oral spasmolytic therapy. Research question: What degree of severity, type and duration of pretreatment indicated ITB?

Nonconsumptive effects of a range‐expanding predator on juvenile lobster (Homarus americanus) population dynamics

open access: yesEcosphere, 2019
Distribution shifts poleward are a widespread response to climate change and can result in altered community composition and interactions among species that previously were geographically isolated.

FoxH1 represses miR-430 during early embryonic development of zebrafish via non-canonical regulation

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2019
Background FoxH1 is a forkhead transcription factor with conserved key functions in vertebrate mesoderm induction and left-right patterning downstream of the TGF-beta/Nodal signaling pathway.

Discovery of 21cm absorption in a $z_{\rm abs} =2.289$ DLA towards TXS 0311+430: The first low spin temperature absorber at z > 1

open access: yes, 2007
We report the detection of HI 21 cm absorption from the $z=2.289$ damped Lyman-$\alpha$ system (DLA) towards TXS 0311+430, with the Green Bank Telescope.
